Looking to start a mentoring program for males grades 5-8, who are on free and reduced lunch. So many of these students missing that key positive male role model in their life. Changing the world one relationship at a time.... anyone know of any model programs?.... funding sources?

We use a local college for mentors. Especially the sports teams whose players need a certain # of volunteer hours per year. It works great.

I'm focusing on building relationships with some challenging students. I will be meeting with them after school for one hour per week to play wii. This is not academic, obviously. However, my goal is to build solid relationships. The only funding needed was for the cost of the wii an that was donated. It will, most likely, be more difficult to attain a wii than pay for one.

I started a college readiness academy for 5th graders. They made dreamboards about their future and we used a Get Ready for College free curriculum. Here is the link:

I'm a middle school principal. Looking for info on how and if you let your students use cell phones in classes. We don't allow it right now, but I think we should be. Your thoughts?

I am a high school principal and I do believe that cell phones will be in classrooms (they are now...they are just hidden)...we can and should leverage these. I have begun introducing this idea to my faculty and parents. To my surprise, my faculty is completely on board and my parents have serious reservations. We need to demonstrate educational applications and intelligent use and that will fall away.

They cause us SO many problems, and I see no need for them at school. Our policy allows students to have them but use them. Too much cheating, inappropriate picture-taking, etc.

Thank you for these sources Harry. I will definitely use these over the summer as I work on a parent education program on the value of cell phones in education (among other things we will share). Our district will likely open the use of these up within a year, but I have found the need to really lay the foundation with their use within my building and the need to communicate these advantages to my parents...which will be ongoing. Thank you again and please share others as you find them.

How exciting that a principal sees the educational value of cell phones. I am trying to convince my principal but no luck yet.

I am a high school assistant principal and I see the benefits. We currently do not permit cell phones, but we know that almost all of our kids have them. There can be so many good uses of them in the classroom and we would also have the ability to teach appropriate use of mobile technology.

I recently attended a tech conference and the keynote speaker (Hal Davidson from Discovery Education) had handouts and ideas on how to use cell phones in the classroom. Go to this web address and you can find helpful info. http://www.discoveryedspeakersbureau.com/davidson/keynotes . Hal is also on twitter so you might want to befriend him and ask him specific questions. Hope this helps!

A terrific resource on cell phone in education is Liz Kolb's blog: From Toy to Tool: Cell Phones in Learning: http://www.cellphonesinlearning.com/ as well as her recently published book, which you can find on her blog.

I am a middle school principal in search of a staff development speaker concerning PLCs. We are just starting to talk about PLCs.
I am looking for someone who is well versed in the subject & will keep it "real" for us.

My leadership team reads a book that we disccuss after each summer. We have read several including A Whole New Mind, Good to Great and The Daily Disciplines of Leadership. I am considering a few for this summer, but I wonder if anyone has suggestions for great books. I am looking for a book that will reinforce systematic curriculum work we are doing with the College Readiness Standards (from ACT) and continue our work with literacy (which includes effective implementation and application of technology). Ideas?

I am looking for examples of teacher observation forms. I am not happy with the one we have in my school system. Do you have one that you use and like?
