I am a learning disabilities teacher in a middle school. I'm looking to set up intervention steps for low or non readers at the 6-8 grade levels, probably involving a class of only one period per day. Of course, it must be researched based so administration would back the program. Any great successes to share from those of you in the trenches - with small groups of kids??

Hi Sheri,
I just signed onto the education group. I'm a learning disabilities specialist & board certified educational therapist - been teaching for 35+ years. I also write books & make games & guides to use with students of all ages to improve reading, spelling, writing, study skills, & math. The materials are based on research from the Univ of Kansas + 5 year studies have been done using the materials. [I have lots of research to support the materials available.] I think you might like to check them out - they really help low readers to improve there fluency & comprehension. I always did about 4-6 activities per hour with my students, working on word attack skills through spelling, then fluency, then reading text, then comprehension of the text. Each activity varies from 5 minutes to 15 minutes. They can be done in small groups. I typically saw my students just an hour a day. Also have lots of free activities/tips available at my blog: www.bonnieterry.com/blog Hope this helps. BTW, I created the materials to use with all ages - even high schoolers & adult literacy groups use them, so there is nothing 'cutesy' about them. Hope this helps!

I'm behind the times and just signed up for a twitter account and now for this group. I'm looking forward to increasing my knowledge and find new ways to reach my students. I work with students with mild to profound disabilities. We have 25 students in total...I'll be working primarily with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. I'd appreciate any suggestions!

I am behind in times as well. I just signed up on twitter and for this group. I am currently working on my masters in administration and taking a Educational Technology class. The class has encouraged me to become involved with online collaboration. I have been in Special Education going on 3 years and am finding it to be a real struggle. I am wanting to find a way to incorporate technology into my classroom. I have just learned that my case load has went up to 20 and this is going to be tough consider my classroom is small and most of my kids are MR. Anyway any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Hope everyone has a great year. I start on Wednesday August 19.
Thanks!

HI,
I am a special education teacher, too. I teach 6th grade in a self contained 12:1:1 setting for both math and ELA, and then push in for the other subjects. Every year, I feel very frustrated, because I can't seem to find an appropriate math text book to use with my students. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good basic math text book that you have used. Most of my students are functioning between first to third grade levels. any help would be very much appreciated!!!!! Thank you!

I am a high school special education teacher in Central Nebraska. I have been teaching special education for 9 years. I was an elementary and SPED major when I graduated from college, but was hired as a high school SPED teacher and decided I liked it so went back and worked to get my high school degree. I am in a one to one school which has caused me to try to learn quickly about computers. I love the information that I can gain from twitter in the matter of minutes. I teach totally CWC and have 2 guided study halls that I work with. I go into Biology, Earth Science, an 8th grade NE history class and Junior English--so I get the joy of learning and growing with kids across many different curricular areas.

I'm not sure how to add my info above. I'm a 9th grade EBD/LD Teacher; I teach a Special Ed. Science class, co-teach a Special Ed. Math class, teach 2 Human Realtions courses (social skills/corrective thinking), and facilitate self-contained resources during the day. I am looking for networking and all the excellent conversation, ideas, links, etc. that go along with it! My twitter is: joelthemuskyman (I guide for muskies full-time during the summers here in WI).
